What is PROFINET S2 system redundancy?

PROFINET S2 system redundancy is designed to provide high availability for automation systems. With S2,  the drive maintains simultaneous communication with two controllers—a primary and a backup.

If the primary controller fails, communication automatically switches to the backup controller without interrupting operation, helping to prevent unplanned downtime and production losses. This makes S2 ideal for safety critical and continuous process applications

What is PROFINET Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP)?

PROFINET Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP), defined by IEC 62439-2, ensures high network availability in ring topologies. In the event of a cable break or device failure, MRP enables rapid network reconfiguration typically within 200 ms.

An MRP ring can support up to 50 devices (depending on the MRP manager), allowing communication to continue via an alternative path. Without MRP, affected devices would lose communication with the PROFINET controller, potentially causing system shutdown.
